THE BRIGHTON CONTINGENT
The Brighton Contingent is SWH’s most recent collection, shot in March 2020 during the rising anxiety of the Covid-19 pandemic and just days before UK lockdown; the last blowout before this group of musicians, musos, artists and agitators went their separate ways.
Inspired by The Bromley Contingent, a crew of creative teens who listened to Roxy Music, borrowed ideas from Bowie and became the entourage that followed the Sex Pistols in the ‘70s, helping to popularise the fashion of the UK punk movement. They customised their clothes and style, appropriating design & iconography, ripping up and remaking, making beautiful-ugly a cultural movement that dominated it’s era. And with it, characters like Billy Idol, Sioxsie Sioux and Soo Catwoman revolutionised social groups, impacted politics & shifted public opinion.

This collection was inspired by contemporary dance - creating movement in air with natural, unforced expression. A story of static and weightless movement, fresh summer pantones and consumer palettes with a contemporary vibe.
“What we loved about this story was what happens to the naked eye when looking at static images and then jumping and moving in shot caught on camera creates an anti-gravity movement and how the hair naturally moves and creates shapes, taking a consumer cut into a different world.”
